Shark Identification Workshops
Since January 1, 2007, the National Marine Fisheries Service has required several HMS permit holders to attend workshops. We facilitate the Atlantic Shark Identification Workshop for NOAA / National Marine Fisheries Service.
Workshop Objectives:
The objective of these workshops is to reduce the number of unknown and improperly identified sharks reported in the dealer reporting form, and to increase the accuracy of species-specific dealer reported information, quota monitoring, and the data used in stock assessments. These workshops will train shark dealer permit holders, or their proxies, and shark dealer permit applicants to properly identify Atlantic shark carcasses.
Who is Required to Attend?
Shark dealer permit holders must attend this workshop and obtain a workshop certificate prior to renewing their shark dealer permit. Shark dealers may send someone else ( i.e. , a proxy) to a workshop, instead of attending themselves. Applicants for a new or expired shark dealer permit must also attend a workshop and obtain a Shark Identification Workshop Certificate before the dealer permit will be issued.
